John Lennon and Elton John had become good friends along the 70s. They composed and played together several times live and in studio.In 1974, they also played together at the Madison Square Garden in New York, the city where John Lennon had been living for some time.
After Lennon's death, Elton John composed a song named
Empty Garden as a tribute to his musician friend. The song became very popular in the eighties, also because of that.
